🌍 Overview

The IronDeer Gravel Challenge is a demanding one-day gravel adventure through the most spectacular landscapes of central Portugal.

It’s a ride for strong, experienced cyclists who crave elevation, endurance, and raw beauty — a full-day journey blending the wild heart of Portugal with world-class gravel terrain.

🗺️ Route Highlights

Nazaré → Eucalyptus Forests

Depart from the legendary surf town of Nazaré and climb inland through dense eucalyptus and pine forests. The gravel roads twist through the hills, with constant scent of resin and ocean air behind you.

Porto de Mós → Serras de Aire

Reach the medieval village of Porto de Mós, dominated by its iconic green-tiled castle, before beginning the main climb into the Serras de Aire. Expect a mix of steady gravel ascents and rocky ridges with panoramic views across the limestone hills.

Serra dos Candeeiros Wind Park

Cross the spine of the Serra dos Candeeiros, passing the impressive Parque Eólico wind turbines. This high plateau offers incredible 360° views — one of the most scenic gravel sections in Portugal.

Caldas da Rainha → Lagoa de Óbidos

Descend through quiet rural roads to Caldas da Rainha, then head toward the shimmering Lagoa de Óbidos. Smooth gravel paths wind between farmland, dunes, and coastal wetlands — perfect for a mid-ride break.

Foz do Arelho → São Martinho do Porto → Nazaré

Follow the Atlantic coastline north through Foz do Arelho and São Martinho do Porto, with the ocean always in view. The final stretch back to Nazaré offers fast-rolling gravel and sea breeze — a powerful finish to an epic day in the saddle.

Our tour with Vasco was definitely one of the highlights of our holidays in Portugal. The value we got for the price with paid was insane, from the top-spec bikes (Orbea RISE H15!!!) to the guidance and nice attitude of Vasco, who knows every single trail in the area by heart … I would do it again without any doubt. Vasco adapted the ride to our technical level, which made the experience a pure pleasure, without having to worry about anything. Thanks a ton for the best 4h of our vacations.

Vasco Set us up on some fantastic mountain E Bikes and gave us maps of routes to take with best lookouts and places to visit. I would highly recommend Irondeer E-Bike tours and rental. We had great rides up and down the coast and certainly enjoyed the extra help on the hills south of Nazare!!

We had the best time going on an e-bike tour with Vasco! He is an experienced cyclist who knows the area very well. The bikes are extremely high quality, and built to endure mountain biking trails, but he can tailor your adventure to mountain biking or street riding. There were three of us, and two were not comfortable riding on difficult trails, so we did mostly streets with a few simple trails. We saw so much that we wouldn’t have otherwise! Dinosaur tracks, a hangliding takeoff point, small towns in the hills, the piers south of Nazaré, and views of Nazare from the other side. We also got to stop and enjoy some coffee and pastries. Some of the views were obscured because it was a foggy day (this is why I included fewer pictures), but we still had an amazing time.

We highly recommend it. The pedal assist makes it pretty simple - the hills would be insane without it! This was easily one of the highlights of our visit to Nazaré.
