The IronDeer R50 SL is our carbon road wheelset: 50 mm deep, 23 mm internal width, carbon spokes, 1160 g a pair on our scale and €1,200. The road wheel market is far bigger than gravel, so we compared it with the wheels riders actually search for and recognise: the Zipp 404 Firecrest, Roval Rapide CLX II and ENVE SES 4.5, Shimano's Dura-Ace C50 and Campagnolo's Bora Ultra WTO 45, and the carbon-spoke wheels that Hunt, Winspace and Elitewheels sell direct.
Every figure below is a manufacturer claim or a listed price, checked in September 2026, except the R50 SL's weight, which we measured ourselves. We have no wind-tunnel data of our own, so there are no invented watt savings here. Where a competitor does something better, we say so.
The Short Answer
On weight, the R50 SL is the lightest wheelset in this comparison: 1160 g measured, against claims from 1263 g (Winspace) to 1520 g (Roval). It is one of four here with carbon spokes, and it takes the widest tyre range, 28 to 45C, on a hooked rim.
Where it gives ground: Zipp, Roval, ENVE and Hunt developed their rims in the wind tunnel, several with different front and rear profiles, while the R50 SL has a symmetric 50 mm rim and no published aero data. Its 120 kg system weight limit is lower than Roval's. And it has none of the race history of the big names.
R50 SL vs Zipp 404, Roval Rapide and ENVE SES 4.5
These are the names that come up most when riders look for a 50 mm carbon road wheel. All three cost well over €1,600 before VAT.

On claimed figures the R50 SL is about 310 g lighter than the Zipp and roughly 360 g lighter than the Roval, even though Roval's figure includes tape and valves. It is also the only one of the four with a hooked rim rated for tyres up to 45 mm. What the other three have is serious aerodynamic development: the Zipp is 8 mm deeper, and Roval and ENVE use different front and rear rims to balance speed with crosswind stability.
Against Shimano Dura-Ace and Campagnolo Bora
Many riders simply stay with the wheels from their groupset brand. These are the flagship 45 to 50 mm wheels from Shimano and Campagnolo.

The Dura-Ace C50 is the natural choice on a Shimano bike, but it only takes Shimano 12-speed cassettes. The Bora Ultra WTO 45 is the Italian classic, made in Campagnolo's own European factories with ceramic bearings, and at 1325 g claimed it is among the closest to our weight; it also costs three times as much. Both have narrower tyre ranges and steel spokes.

Hunt's SUB50 was developed in the wind tunnel with a wider front rim and comes with crash replacement, but it costs over €1,000 more and is about 220 g heavier on claims. The Winspace Hyper 5 is the lightest rival here at 1263 g claimed, and once EU VAT is added it sits close to our price; its warranty is two years. The Elitewheels Drive 50D II, from the brand whose gravel wheels we also sell and service, is the most similar wheel of all: 50 mm deep, 23 mm inside, carbon spokes, a hooked rim and a similar price. It is 140 g heavier on claims and rated for narrower tyres.
Weight: 1160 g on Our Scale
We weighed a production pair on our workshop scale: 1160 g without rim tape and valves. That is 25 g over the claimed 1135 g and inside the stated ±30 g; the claim is for unpainted rims, and paint adds a little.
Most of the saving comes from two places. Each rim is claimed at 360 ±15 g, laid up from Toray T700, T800 and T1000 carbon. And the spokes are carbon: Hunt, Winspace and Elitewheels do the same here, while Zipp, Roval, ENVE, Shimano and Campagnolo use steel. Low weight at the rim is what you feel when you accelerate out of a corner or attack a short climb.
Rim and Tyres: 23 mm Inside, Hooked, 28 to 45C
A 23 mm internal width is today's road standard, the same as Zipp, Campagnolo, Hunt, Winspace and Elitewheels. ENVE goes wider at 25 mm; Roval and Shimano stay at 21 mm.
The hooked rim means you are not limited to an approved tyre list or to the low maximum pressures of hookless rims: the Zipp 404, for example, is limited to 73 psi and 28 to 35 mm tyres. Pressure limits for the R50 SL are in our owner's manual.
The 28 to 45C range is the widest here. The same wheels can run a 28 mm race tyre on the coast road or a 40 mm light gravel tyre for mixed rides on the Silver Coast.
Warranty and Crash Replacement
The R50 SL has a three-year IronDeer warranty on manufacturing and material defects. Damage from riding is not a defect, so on top of that the original owner can buy a replacement R50 SL rim after a crash for €160 instead of €200 within three years, with rebuild labour at our service centre prices. Four spare carbon spokes come in the box, and we fit them free of charge in the first year. None of this replaces your legal guarantee as a consumer in Portugal and the EU.
Where the Competition Is Stronger
Aerodynamics. Zipp, Roval, ENVE and Hunt developed their wheels in the wind tunnel, and Roval, ENVE and Hunt use different front and rear rims. The R50 SL has a symmetric rim and we have no wind-tunnel figures for it.
Crash cover. Zipp's lifetime warranty covers riding damage for the original owner, and Hunt offers free lifetime crash replacement. With us a new rim costs €160 plus labour.
System weight. The R50 SL is rated for 120 kg including bike and luggage. Roval allows 125 kg.
Track record. Zipp, Roval, ENVE, Shimano and Campagnolo wheels have won Grand Tours and Classics. The R50 SL is new.
Who the R50 SL Is For
Road riders who want a light 50 mm carbon wheel with carbon spokes for well under the price of the big names
Riders who climb as much as they ride on the flat and value low rotating weight
Anyone who wants one wheelset for 28 mm road tyres and wider all-road tyres, on a hooked rim
It is not the wheel for you if you race time trials where every watt of aero counts, need a system weight limit above 120 kg, or put free crash replacement and a proven race history ahead of weight and price.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I run the R50 SL tubeless?
Yes. The hooked rim works with tubeless tyres and with inner tubes.
Which freehubs and axles are available?
Shimano HG or SRAM XDR freehub, 12x100 mm front and 12x142 mm rear thru-axles, disc brake only.
What does a new rim cost after a crash?
A replacement R50 SL rim is €200. For the original owner within three years of purchase it is €160, plus rebuild labour, spokes and nipples at our service centre prices.
R50 SL or G50 SL?
The R50 SL is the road wheel: 23 mm inside, 28 to 45C tyres, 1160 g. The G50 SL is built for gravel: 30 mm inside, 40 to 60C tyres, 1279 g. Read our G50 SL comparison for the gravel side.
