About this Tour
Perfect for: 👥 Friends & Solos · 💑 Couples · 👨👩👧👦 Families · 👨🦳 Seniors
Praia do Norte is the beach where the world surfing record holds: 26.21 metres, set off the canyon below the lighthouse in winter 2020. The ride out is short, 20 km round trip and 200 metres of climbing, but the view from Forte de São Miguel Arcanjo at the cliff edge is the postcard you came to Portugal for. The e-bike means you arrive at it with breath to spare for photos. A private ride with one local guide. You agree the start time when you book.
The Sítio climb
From the Irondeer base on Praia da Nazaré, you ride the seafront for a kilometre and then turn inland to climb the Sítio road. This is the only real climb of the tour: 110 metres on a step-through e-bike with a Bosch motor on power level three. Without the assist, this hill is the reason most visitors take the funicular. With it, you barely notice the gradient, and you arrive at the Sítio plateau ready to walk into the square rather than catch your breath.
The guide stops at the cliff-edge belvedere first. Below you, the half-moon of Praia da Nazaré curves south, the colourful tents of the dry-fish ladies a thin stripe between the sand and the seafront. To the north, the cliff drops 110 metres straight into the Atlantic. On a clear morning before the haze comes up, you can see São Pedro de Moel forty kilometres up the coast.
The Sanctuary and the deer
Sítio is older than Nazaré. The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Nazaré on the square dates to the late 14th century and was built around the legend of Dom Fuas Roupinho, the 12th-century knight who chased a deer through fog toward the cliff edge and was, the story goes, pulled up short by a vision. The Cercado dos Veados, a small fenced deer reserve in the pine forest on the way to the lighthouse, was created by the town and the Confraria to keep the memory of the miracle physically present on the route.
The ride between the Sanctuary and the lighthouse is the prettiest two kilometres in town: a flat pine forest path, cool even on hot afternoons, with the sound of the Atlantic getting louder as you approach the headland. The smell is eucalyptus first, then salt.
Forte de São Miguel Arcanjo and Praia do Norte
The white 16th-century fort at the headland was built in 1577 to defend the coast against pirates, and now functions as a working lighthouse and a small surf museum. The boards inside belong to the surfers who have set and reset the big-wave record here: Garrett McNamara, Sebastian Steudtner, Maya Gabeira. The photo wall does what no description can. It tells you, with one image per winter swell, exactly how big this beach gets between October and February when the swell builds and the Nazaré Canyon funnels deep-water energy into shore.
From the fort wall you look directly down onto Praia do Norte. In May, June or September the beach looks almost ordinary: dunes, surfers on shortboards, a dog or two. In a January storm it is something else entirely. The guide walks you through what the Nazaré Canyon does to incoming swell, and suddenly the geography of the headland makes sense.
The descent back
The return is mostly downhill: back through the pine forest, past the deer reserve, then a long gentle descent off the Sítio plateau into town. No brakes burning, no white knuckles. The e-bike's regen and the controlled gradient make this the easiest part of the day. You finish where you started, salt on your lip and a phone full of cliff-edge photos. If the bigger picture appeals — sunset in the Salgado hills, or a full coastal day — the same bike does our other tours, and the guide can swap a 750Wh battery for the longer rides.
