About this Tour

Perfect for: 💑 Couples · 👥 Friends & Solos · 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Families · 👨‍🦳 Seniors · 🚵‍♀️ Adventure Seekers

Two ways the day can run. You ride the Silver Coast south from Nazaré in the morning, then climb the Serra da Pescaria and fly tandem off the launch with Nuno. Or you fly first, while the wind window is open, and ride after — back along the dune line with the flight still in your legs. The order is the guide's call on the day. The flight is roughly twenty minutes in the air, one passenger at a time, with Cloudbase Portugal.

Who you fly with

Cloudbase Portugal is a fixed partner on this tour, not a rotation. Nuno takes the flight himself: four-times Portuguese paragliding champion, more than twenty years in the air, one of the most experienced tandem pilots in the country. Harness, helmet and wing are his. Your job is to walk a few steps with him, sit back into the seat, and let the air do the rest.

No paragliding experience is needed. The launch is gentle, the lift comes on quickly off the ridge, and once you are up the noise of running drops away and what is left is the wing, the wind and the line of coast running south.

The ride along the Silver Coast

Around 50 kilometres on the bike across the day, mostly coastal and rolling, with about 580 metres of climbing distributed across the route. Moderate ground, comfortable on an e-MTB with full assist. The bikes are Orbea Wild eMTBs with Bosch Performance CX motors and 750Wh batteries, which is more range than the route needs and the right tool for the surfaces. Tarmac, hard-packed sand tracks, short sections of gravel through the pine.

From Nazaré the route drops south past the headland and runs the coastline above Praia do Salgado. The Salgado dunes are an active two-cord system between the river mouth and the beach, walked through on a low boardwalk where the route allows. Further on, the Pedra do Ouro section of cliffs holds visible dinosaur tracks in the Late Jurassic limestone. A quiet stop, easy to miss without someone to point at the right slab. The turn-around is São Martinho do Porto, the near-perfect shell-shaped bay south of the Serra.

Serra da Pescaria — the launch

The Serra da Pescaria is the outcrop running parallel to the coast south of Nazaré, the highest ground on this stretch. The exposed Upper Jurassic limestone here is among the oldest rock in the region, which is the geology end of why the ridge is shaped the way it is, and why the air rises off it cleanly. The Cloudbase launch sits on its western face, looking out over the dune system and the open Atlantic, with Praia do Salgado below and the curve of São Martinho do Porto further south.

Once you are airborne, the bay opens. You can see the line of dunes from above, the sand and the pine, sometimes a fishing boat coming in to the port, occasionally a hawk working the same column of air. Twenty minutes is longer than it sounds when the only sound is the wind in the lines.

How the day fits together

This is a private guided tour. One group, one Irondeer guide on the bikes, Nuno on the wing. Tandem paragliding depends on a wind window, typically morning or late afternoon on this coast, and that window decides the order of the day. The guide and Nuno read the forecast and the sky and pick. If the air closes unexpectedly, the bike route stays and the flight reschedules. The booking conversation covers all of that.

Bring layers. It is colder in the air than on the ground, even on a warm summer day, and the descent back to ground level catches you with the wind on. Closed shoes. Sunglasses. A small backpack for the bike that fits under the harness is useful. Lunch lands somewhere along the route, depending on the order — São Martinho if the ride goes first, the cafés above Foz do Arelho if the flight does.

By late afternoon you are back on the bike rolling north into Nazaré, the headland coming up on the right, the launch ridge visible behind you for the last few kilometres.
