About this Tour
Perfect for: 💑 Couples · 👨👩👧👦 Families · 👥 Friends & Solos · 👨🦳 Seniors
Two hours, one town, and a step-through e-bike that handles the climb up to Sítio while you handle the camera. This is the ride for people who want to see Nazaré properly before lunch on Praia da Nazaré. Easy pace, a private group with a local guide who has ridden this circuit a few hundred times, and a start time you and the guide agree when you book.
Who this ride is for
If anyone in your group has ridden a city bike in the last year, they can ride this. The bikes are step-through e-bikes with a Bosch motor and four power levels. The guide sets you to level two on the flat promenade and bumps you to three for the climb to Sítio. The total elevation is 150 metres, but with assist it feels like 30. The pace is the group's, not the clock's. The guide reads the group and adjusts.
The guide carries water and a basic repair kit. The route is 30 km on paper but feels half that on the bike, and the four power levels mean nobody is fighting the gradient.
The route, in order
You roll out from the Irondeer base, drop onto the seafront promenade at Praia da Nazaré, and ride the length of the half-moon beach. The dry-fish ladies are often laying out horse mackerel on wooden racks in front of the colourful huts. Slow down here. The smell is half the story. The promenade ends at the foot of the funicular. You turn inland and let the motor take the sting out of the 110-metre climb up to Sítio. How long that takes is up to your group.
Sítio is the old fishing village on top of the cliff, and it is where the guide tells you the Dom Fuas Roupinho story: the 12th-century knight who chased a deer toward the cliff edge in fog and was saved, the legend says, by the appearance of Our Lady. The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Nazaré is on the main square. The viewpoint behind it gives you the whole bay in one frame.
Praia do Norte and the lighthouse
From Sítio you ride through the pine forest past Cercado dos Veados, the small deer reserve that commemorates the Roupinho legend, and out to Forte de São Miguel Arcanjo, the white 16th-century fort that doubles as the lighthouse and surf museum on Praia do Norte. This is the beach where the world surfing record was set in winter 2020. In May the swell is small and the cliffs look almost gentle. The museum's photo wall does the work of explaining what happens here in January.
The return loop drops back via the Pederneira belvedere, a smaller hilltop hamlet that was the regional capital in the 17th century, before the sea retreated and the fishermen rebuilt on the beach below. You finish where you started, with four viewpoints and a clear mental map of Nazaré that most visitors never get.
What to wear, what to expect
Closed shoes, sunglasses, a light layer for the cliff section. The wind sharpens once you're up on the Sítio plateau. Helmets, gloves, eye protection and bottled water are included. The guide carries a phone with the booking number for follow-on tours. If this 30 km loop leaves you wanting more, the same e-bike can do our Big Waves Tour or a half-day to São Pedro de Moel another day.
