IronDeer Wheel Owner's Manual and Conditions of Use

Version 1.0. Applies to all IronDeer carbon wheels, including the IronDeer G50 SL.

Read this manual before your first ride and keep it for as long as you own the wheels. If you sell or give the wheels to someone else, pass this manual on with them. A printable version is available on request from info@irondeer.pt.

1. Safety Warning

Carbon wheels are strong and light, but they fail differently from metal. A carbon rim or carbon spoke that has been damaged by an impact can look intact and still fail suddenly on a later ride. A wheel failure at speed can cause a crash with serious injury or death.

Follow the limits and checks in this manual. If you are unsure whether a wheel is safe, do not ride it. Contact us or a qualified wheel mechanic first.

2. Intended Use

IronDeer G50 SL wheels are designed for ASTM F2043 Condition 2 riding:

  • riding on paved roads, gravel roads, forest tracks and smooth trails;

  • gravel racing, bikepacking and long-distance riding within the load limit below;

  • drops of no more than 15 cm, such as kerbs, steps and small roots, with both wheels staying in contact with the ground as much as possible. No jumps.

Maximum system weight: 120 kg. This is the total of rider, bike, clothing, luggage and water. Do not exceed it.

3. Not Intended For

Do not use IronDeer G50 SL wheels for:

  • mountain biking, enduro, downhill, bike parks, jumps, drops above 15 cm or technical riding over large rocks and roots;

  • e-bikes of any kind, tandems, cargo bikes, or towing a trailer;

  • rim brakes. These wheels are for disc brakes only and have no brake track;

  • tyres narrower than 40 mm or wider than 60 mm;

  • riding with a flat or very low-pressure tyre, except slowly to get off the road;

  • stunts, wheelies or any use that puts sideways or impact loads on the wheel beyond normal riding.

Damage caused by use outside these conditions is not a manufacturing defect and is not covered by the IronDeer warranty.

4. Compatibility and Fitting

  • Wheel size: 700C (ETRTO 622).

  • Rim: hooked bead, 30 mm internal width, 50 mm depth. Suitable for tubeless-ready tyres with tubeless tape and valves, and for tyres with inner tubes.

  • Tyres: 40 to 60 mm wide only. Use tyres from reputable makers that are marked as compatible with a 30 mm internal rim width.

  • Axles: 12 × 100 mm front and 12 × 142 mm rear thru-axle. Quick-release skewers are not compatible.

  • Brakes: disc brakes only. Fit rotors and tighten rotor bolts or lockrings to the torque given by the rotor maker.

  • Freehub: use the freehub body that matches your cassette (SRAM XDR, Shimano HG or Shimano 12-speed).

Maximum tyre pressure depends on the width printed on the tyre:

  • 40 to 44 mm: 3.5 bar (51 psi)

  • 45 to 54 mm: 3.0 bar (44 psi)

  • 55 to 60 mm: 2.5 bar (36 psi)

Never exceed these limits or the maximum printed on the tyre, whichever is lower. These are upper limits, not recommended pressures: on gravel you will usually ride well below them.

We recommend that the first fitting is done by IronDeer or a qualified bicycle mechanic. After fitting, check that the brakes work properly and that the wheel spins freely without rubbing.

5. Checks Before Every Ride

  • Thru-axles are tight and closed according to the frame and fork maker's instructions.

  • Tyre pressure is within the limits in section 4.

  • No cracks, chips, dents, delamination or soft spots on the rim, especially on the bead hooks and around the spoke holes.

  • No cuts, fraying, bends or chips on any spoke. Squeeze pairs of spokes together: all should feel equally tight.

  • The wheel spins true and has no side-to-side play at the hub.

  • No new noises such as clicking, creaking or grinding while riding.

If you find any of these problems, do not ride the wheel until it has been inspected.

6. After a Crash or Hard Impact

After a crash, a hard pothole hit, a rock strike, a dropped bike or a transport accident:

  1. Stop riding the wheel, even if it looks fine.

  2. Inspect it as described in section 5.

  3. Have it checked by IronDeer or a qualified wheel mechanic before riding again.

Damage inside carbon is not always visible. When in doubt, have the wheel inspected. Crash damage is not covered by the warranty, but the original owner can get a replacement rim at a reduced price. See the IronDeer wheel warranty.

7. Carbon Spokes

  • Carbon spokes are strong in tension but can be damaged by stones, sticks, a dropped chain or a derailleur in the spokes. Check them after any such event.

  • Do not replace or retension carbon spokes yourself unless you are a qualified wheel builder. Wrong tension can cause spoke or rim failure. Use only original IronDeer spokes.

  • Each wheelset comes with 4 spare spokes. In the first year we fit them free of charge.

8. Transport, Storage and Heat

  • Never clamp the rim or the spokes in a bike stand, car rack or roof carrier. Use racks that hold the frame, fork or thru-axles.

  • Protect the wheels in a padded bag or box when travelling or shipping, with the brake rotors protected.

  • Keep the wheels away from strong heat: car exhaust pipes, heaters, or a closed car in direct summer sun for long periods.

  • Clean with water and mild soap. Do not use solvents, strong degreasers or high-pressure washers on the rims, spokes or hubs.

9. Maintenance

  • Have the spoke tension and trueness checked after the first few rides, and at least once a year after that.

  • Have the hubs and bearings serviced at least once a year, and more often if you ride in rain, mud, sand or near the sea.

  • Replace tubeless sealant according to the sealant maker's instructions, and tubeless tape whenever it is damaged.

  • Bearings, ratchet parts, freehub bodies, rim tape and valves are wear parts and must be replaced when worn.

10. Register Your Wheels and Safety Notices

Email info@irondeer.pt with your name, order number and date of purchase to register your wheels. We use this only to contact you if there is a safety notice or recall for your wheels. If we publish a safety notice, it will also appear on this site.

The IronDeer warranty covers manufacturing and material defects for three years from delivery. Full terms are on the IronDeer wheel warranty page.

This manual does not limit your rights under Portuguese and EU consumer and product liability law. It sets out how the wheels must be used, fitted and maintained. Damage or injury caused by use outside these conditions, by incorrect fitting or repair, by parts that are not compatible, or by continuing to ride a damaged wheel, is not the result of a defect in the wheel.
