About this Tour
Perfect for: 👨👩👧👦 Families · 👨🦳 Seniors · 👥 Friends & Solos
Thirty kilometres up the Silver Coast and back, with a couple of hours in the saddle and a couple more off it. This is the short north ride, designed for the morning you want the Atlantic without the day-long commitment. Praia do Norte, the red-deer reserve in the pines above Sítio, the sandstone cliffs at Vale Furado, and the long quiet beach at Paredes da Vitória. Private guided e-bike tour, one local guide, your group only, pace agreed on the road.
Praia do Norte and the wild side of Nazaré
Praia do Norte sits on the wrong side of the Promontório da Nazaré, the imposing headland Nazarenes call Sítio. Which is exactly what makes it the right side. The dunes are intact. The vegetation is the vegetation that has always been there. In winter, when the Nazaré canyon channels the Atlantic into the wall of cliff just south, this is where the big-wave surfers gather and the air smells of salt spray driven inland on the wind. In summer it is quieter, longer, emptier than the town beach a few minutes south. The climb up to Sítio from town is the first effort of the day. On the Orbea Wild eMTB with the Bosch Performance CX motor it is a steady spin rather than a grind.
Cercado dos Veados, hidden in the pines
In the Pinhal de Nossa Senhora da Nazaré, the pinewood that wraps the headland, there is a small fenced reserve called the Cercado dos Veados. Red deer, kept here as a tribute to the legend of D. Fuas Roupinho. You can sometimes hear them before you see them. The route in is on a soft forest path under stone pines that smell of resin from May through September, sharper after rain. It is the kind of stop a coach tour does not make. We stop for as long as the group wants to, which is usually longer than expected.
Cliffs at Vale Furado
North again, the road drops toward Praia de Vale Furado. The cliffs here are sandstone, the same Feligueira Grande formation where, in 1975, palaeontologists first described an extinct crocodile-relative called Iberosuchus from fossils dug out of the rock. The cliff face looks ordinary until the guide points out what you are looking at. We stop at the lookout and let it sink in. You can usually hear the surf at the base of the cliff and, in spring, peregrines working the updraft.
Paredes da Vitória, the empty beach
Paredes da Vitória — "walls of victory" — gets its name from the ruined walls of older settlements the first occupants found here. A Roman road once ran inland from this stretch of coast through the Serra d'Aire e Candeeiros toward Collipo and Conimbriga, dated to the first century BC. Today it is a small fishing-village beach with cliff on both sides and almost nobody on it for most of the year. We roll down the access road, leave the bikes, and walk the last bit to the sand. This is usually where the group decides whether to swim. The water is honest Atlantic, cool even in July.
How the ride sits in the day
Thirty kilometres round trip, about 360m of climbing across the route, on a mix of quiet coastal roads and well-built bike path through the pines. Easy on the e-bike, comfortable if you have ridden a city bike in the last year. You and the guide agree the start time when you book. In summer earlier mornings are usually better, before the northwest wind builds in the afternoon. Helmet, gloves, eye protection and water included. If you want the longer version of this coast, the half-day route up to São Pedro de Moel continues from Paredes north through the Pinhal de Leiria.
