Nazaré is one of those rare places that quietly out-delivers its reputation. Most travellers arrive for the legendary giant waves at Praia do Norte and leave talking about everything else: the cobbled fishing village, the e-bike rides along clifftop paths, the monasteries hiding in the hills, and the pine-scented coastal trails that link a string of half-empty Silver Coast beaches. If you are looking for the best things to do in Nazaré — whether you have an afternoon, a weekend, or a full week — this is the local guide we wish every visitor had on day one.
We are Irondeer — a Nazaré-based bike rental and guided tour operator, the first official Elitewheels partner in Portugal, and we have spent the last decade designing routes around this coast. Below are the activities, tours and day trips we keep recommending in 2026, ordered roughly the way we would build your itinerary.
Why Nazaré tops every Portugal adventure list
Nazaré sits halfway between Lisbon and Porto on Portugal's Silver Coast (Costa de Prata), the stretch of Atlantic shoreline known for dramatic cliffs, pine forests, and a 5,000-metre-deep underwater canyon that turns winter swells into the biggest surfable waves on Earth. Within a 30-kilometre radius you have UNESCO-listed monasteries, a pilgrimage city, medieval walled towns, salt-flat lagoons, and quiet gravel tracks — almost all of it cyclable, walkable, or reachable in under an hour.
In short: Nazaré is small enough to feel like a fishing village and connected enough to be a base for one of the most varied adventure regions in Western Europe.
1. Watch the giants at Praia do Norte
If you only do one thing, do this. The Farol da Nazaré (red lighthouse) sits on a headland directly above Praia do Norte and gives you a safe, dramatic view of the Atlantic at full power. From October to March, swells regularly run 15–25 metres, and during big-wave events tow-in surfers ride 25-metre-plus walls of water just below your feet. Inside the old fort is the Surf Memorial Museum, worth the small entry fee for the boards, photos and history of how a Portuguese local convinced Garrett McNamara to come and break a world record.
Best time: November to February for peak swell, December–January for record-chasing days. Arrive 60–90 minutes before sunset for the best light and the lowest crowds.
Local tip: On busy big-wave days the lighthouse car park is full by 9am. Skip it: walk up from the village, or join our Big Waves e-bike tour of Nazaré, a two-hour ride that links Praia da Nazaré, the Sítio cliffs and the lighthouse with no parking stress.
2. Rent an e-bike and ride the cliff coast
Nazaré was built for two wheels. The town is flat along the seafront, the cliffs are hard work on a regular bike, and the hinterland is laced with quiet farm roads — which is why an e-bike is, hands-down, the most efficient way to see the area. From our bike rental shop in central Nazaré you can be on a clifftop in five minutes and inside a pine forest in fifteen.
We rent premium Orbea e-MTBs, gravel and road bikes, plus a full Elitewheels test fleet for road riders. Every rental includes helmet, lock, repair kit, phone holder and route advice — the same setup we use on guided tours.
Three rides we send first-time visitors on, in order of effort:
Half-day, easy: the coastal promenade north toward Praia do Salgado and back — flat, family-friendly, big ocean views.
Half-day, scenic: our Silver Coast Norte tour to São Pedro de Moel through Pinhal de Leiria forest and clifftop fishing villages.
Full day, southbound: the Silver Coast Sul tour to Foz do Arelho, via the Salgado paragliding cliffs and the Óbidos lagoon.
Silver Coast Norte to São Pedro de Moel
Discover the enchanting beauty of Portugals northern Silver Coast on this half-day e-bike adventure. Ride along the spectacular Atlantic Road, visit pristine beaches, and experience the regions natural splendor with expert local guides.
Silver Coast Sul to Foz do Arelho
Visit the most beautiful beaches along the southern coast and see where paragliders take off into the sea on their way to Foz do Arelho
3. Take the funicular up to Sítio
Sítio is the upper town, perched 100 metres above the beach on a cliff. The 19th-century Ascensor da Nazaré funicular makes the climb in three minutes for a couple of euros, and at the top you get three of the best free attractions in town:
Miradouro do Suberco — a postcard panorama of the crescent beach and the village below.
Santuário de Nossa Senhora da Nazaré — a 14th-century pilgrimage church wrapped in blue azulejo tiles.
Forte de São Miguel Arcanjo & lighthouse — the giant-wave viewpoint covered above.
Linger for late afternoon: the seven traditional black-skirted sete saias women still sell salt-cured fish drying on wooden racks just outside the chapel.
4. Cycle to Fátima or the Alcobaça monastery
Two of the most rewarding rides in central Portugal start in Nazaré.
The Nazaré – Fátima e-bike tour climbs from sea level to the Sanctuary of Fátima — Portugal's most visited pilgrimage site — through Aljubarrota battlefields, olive groves and the limestone Serra de Aire. It is a full-day ride and a serious memory.
The Alcobaça Monastery tour is shorter and just as evocative: a country-road climb out of Nazaré, a long descent into the Alcobaça valley, and a private visit to the UNESCO-listed Mosteiro de Santa Maria de Alcobaça, founded by the Cistercian order in 1153 and home to the famously tragic tombs of Pedro and Inês.
Nazaré - Fátima
Experience an exhilarating bike tour from Nazaré to Fátima, conquering winding mountain roads and breathtaking landscapes. Ride through scenic hills, charming villages, and challenging climbs, finishing at the iconic Fátima Square.
Alcobaça Monastery tour
In this tour we will go there on an "espectacular" country road, climb the mountain and go down to the town, visit a monastery Alcobaça
5. Surf the beach break (yes, beginners welcome)
Praia do Norte is for professionals and tow-in teams only. The other beach — Praia da Nazaré, running directly along the village — is a gentle, sandy beach break that is excellent for first-time surfers, especially from May through September. Local schools run small-group lessons in English, German and Portuguese; expect to stand up by the end of your first session.
Want bigger but still rideable waves? Drive twenty minutes north to São Pedro de Moel or twelve minutes south to Praia do Salgado — both consistent intermediate spots without the Praia do Norte chaos.
6. Paraglide over the Silver Coast
On a clear afternoon you can stand at the edge of the Salgado cliffs and watch tandem paragliders launch directly out over the Atlantic. Our Silver Coast Sul + paragliding combo rides you out to the launch site, hands you off to certified pilots for a 20-minute flight along the cliffline toward Foz do Arelho, and brings you back via gravel tracks through pine woods. Two activities, one of the best half-days in the country.
Silver Coast Sul and Paragliding
Visit the most beautiful beaches along the southern coast and see where paragliders take off into the sea on their way to Foz do Arelho, and you'll be paragliding 20 minutes
Salgado Hills - Night Tour
Discover a different side of the Portuguese coast on our atmospheric night tour. Equipped with powerful lights and guided by experts, youll experience the serenity of moonlit beaches, mystical forests, and the peaceful Salgado hills under the stars.
7. Ride a night tour through the Salgado Hills
After the day-trippers leave, the coast empties out. Our Salgado Hills night tour rolls out at dusk on lit-up e-MTBs through pine forest, beach paths and quiet farm roads, finishing under the stars on a clifftop above Praia do Salgado. It is the most underrated three hours we run — and on a clear night you will see the Milky Way over the Atlantic.
8. Day-trip the nearest villages: São Martinho do Porto, Foz do Arelho, Óbidos
Three of the prettiest places on the Silver Coast are within an easy ride or 30-minute drive of Nazaré.
São Martinho do Porto — a perfectly circular, shell-shaped bay 15 km south. Calm, family-friendly, ideal for SUP and sunset swims.
Foz do Arelho — where the Óbidos lagoon meets the sea. Birdwatching, oyster bars and Portugal's best lagoon-side gravel ride.
Óbidos — a fully walled medieval town 35 km away, famous for cherry liqueur and Christmas markets. Combine with Foz do Arelho for a full day.
For the full picture of nearby attractions, see our Places to Visit on the Silver Coast guide.
9. Detour inland: Batalha Monastery and Mira de Aire caves
Twenty-five kilometres east of Nazaré, the Mosteiro da Batalha is a UNESCO World Heritage masterpiece of late-Gothic and Manueline stonework, built to celebrate the 1385 victory at Aljubarrota that secured Portuguese independence. Combine it with the Grutas de Mira de Aire — Portugal's largest accessible cave system, a guided 110-metre descent through stalactite chambers and underground rivers. Together they make the most rewarding inland day from Nazaré.
When to visit Nazaré
Big-wave season (Nov–Feb): come for the spectacle, expect cool/wet days, plan indoor backups.
Cycling sweet spot (Apr–Jun, Sep–Oct): mild 18–25 °C, long daylight, fewer crowds, smaller waves.
Beach summer (Jul–Aug): busiest, warmest water, festival nights — book accommodation and tours weeks ahead.
Practical guide for first-time visitors
Getting there: 90 minutes from Lisbon, 2.5 hours from Porto. Direct buses run from both cities; a car is helpful but not essential once you arrive.
Where to stay: the village centre puts you within walking distance of the beach, restaurants and our shop on R. Prof. Lineu Soares Miranda 45.
How long to stay: two nights for the highlights, four to seven nights to ride the Silver Coast properly.
What to pack: wind layer, swimsuit, closed shoes for cliffs, and a real camera — phones underplay the scale of the waves.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best thing to do in Nazaré?
For most first-time visitors, the single best thing to do in Nazaré is watch the giant waves at Praia do Norte from the lighthouse viewpoint between November and February. If you are visiting outside big-wave season, an e-bike tour along the Silver Coast cliffs gives you the same dramatic ocean views without needing the right swell forecast.
How many days should I spend in Nazaré?
Two full days are enough to cover the village, Sítio, Praia do Norte and one half-day tour. Add a third day if you want to ride to Alcobaça or São Martinho do Porto, and a fourth or fifth if you plan to cycle to Fátima or take a paragliding flight.
Can you rent bikes in Nazaré?
Yes. Irondeer rents premium Orbea e-mountain bikes, gravel and road bikes, plus an Elitewheels road test fleet, from €30 per day. Every rental includes helmet, lock, handlebar bag, repair kit, phone holder and a free route map. You can pick up at our central Nazaré shop or have bikes delivered to your hotel.
When are the giant waves in Nazaré?
The big-wave season runs from October to March, with peak swells most likely in December, January and February. Waves of 15–25 metres are common during major Atlantic storms, and the world records for largest wave surfed have repeatedly been set at Praia do Norte during this window.
Is Nazaré worth visiting if you do not surf?
Absolutely. Surfing is only one of dozens of things to do in Nazaré. Cycling, paragliding, hiking the coastal trail, visiting Alcobaça and Batalha monasteries, exploring Sítio, eating fresh seafood, watching the fishing boats and day-tripping to Óbidos all work without ever touching a surfboard.
What towns are near Nazaré worth visiting?
The most rewarding nearby destinations are Alcobaça (12 km, monastery), São Martinho do Porto (15 km, shell bay), Foz do Arelho (25 km, lagoon), Óbidos (35 km, walled medieval town), Batalha (25 km, UNESCO monastery), Fátima (45 km, pilgrimage site) and São Pedro de Moel (20 km, forest beach village). All are reachable by e-bike on a guided tour.
