Das vom ersten König Portugals, D. Afonso Henriques, im Jahr 1153 durch eine Schenkung an Bernhard von Clairvaux (Frankreich) gegründete Kloster von Alcobaça ist eines der größten und am besten erhaltenen Zisterzienserklöster Europas und wurde 1989 in die UNESCO-Welterbeliste aufgenommen.
