## About this ride

A 90 km loop from Nazaré to Fátima and back on quiet tarmac and compact limestone farm tracks, past the monasteries at Alcobaça and Batalha and the castle at Porto de Mós. 1,000 m of climbing, most of it on the approach to the Fátima plateau. Five to eight hours depending on how long you spend in the towns. If you want one big day on the Silver Coast, this is the one we recommend.

## Before you go

## The ride

Out of Nazaré through Pederneira and Valado dos Frades on back lanes, small vineyards and eucalyptus, into Alcobaça at km 18. From there the road climbs east through Aljubarrota, the 1385 battlefield, and turns onto compact white-rock farm tracks around Cós and Maiorga. Batalha comes next, then Porto de Mós with its green-tiled castle. The hardest stretch is the climb out of Porto de Mós toward the Fátima plateau, with a few sharper kickers near the top. Eucalyptus gives way to pine, and you arrive at the Cova da Iria basilica complex. The return is rolling and mostly descending, with one short climb through pine plantation.

## Surfaces and bike

Roughly 80% tarmac and 20% gravel. The gravel is benign: no rocks, no ruts. A gravel bike on 40 mm tyres is ideal. A road bike on 32 mm will manage. Elevation runs from 8 m to 412 m, 961 m of ascent in total.

## Water and food

Alcobaça for a long coffee, Porto de Mós for a proper lunch, Fátima for anything you need. Batalha has cafés on the monastery square.

## When

March to June and September to November. In July and August the limestone radiates heat by early afternoon. Start at first light and you will be over the plateau before it bites.

## Getting back

The GPX includes the return leg, so you finish where you started. If you rent from us, phone support on the day is optional.
